In March 2021, he received his first call-up and made his international debut against England. In July 2021, he played against Sri Lanka in his first ODI.After the SL tour, he was accepted into the Test team, but his debut was delayed.
At 30 years and 6 months old, he made his T20I debut. On the day of his ODI debut, he had three years, ten months, and four days left to live. At the age of 32 years, 4 months, and 26 days, he played his first Test.
Shubman Gill lost out to Suryakumar for a spot in the starting XI. KL Rahul has the advantage over Gill since he is the vice-captain, hence he kept his spot. The team's management made the decision to bench an effective Gill and give Suryakumar his debut.
