India defeated Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test, which was played in Nagpur on Saturday, to take a 1-0 series lead.
When India batted in their second innings soon before tea, they dismissed Australia for 91 runs in 32.3 overs thanks to off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (5/37) who also returned with a five-wicket haul. Australia lost a significant first-inning lead of 223 points. After 93 in Mumbai, this was Australia's second-lowest total against India (2004).
Ashwin blasted through the top order of Australia with a probing length delivery, reaching his 31st fifty in just his 10th over, before Ravindra Jadeja (2/34) Mohammed Shami (2/13) and Axar Patel (1/6) finished the job.
Earlier, in a fun 52-run ninth wicket partnership with Shami, who was at his aggressive best in his 37 off 47 balls, Axar Patel scored a career-high 84 (174 balls; 10x4s, 16). (2x4s, 3x6s).
India was bowled out for 400 at midday on a turning Jamtha pitch in response to Australia's 177.
Axar Patel, a left-handed batsman who was 52 at the start of play, appeared composed and in control to provide India a strong batting depth at position nine.
Todd Murphy, a rookie off-spinner for Australia, was the attack's top performer and came back with outstanding stats of 47-12-124-7.
