In the early hours of Monday, February 20, Australian media reported that Australia skipper Pat Cummins would take a flight back home in the middle of the highly publicised Test series between India and Australia to attend to a personal family situation.Cummins is expected to reunite with the team prior to the third Test match, which will begin on March 1 in Indore.
Australia's current tour to the subcontinent has not gone well under Cummins' direction, as they have dropped back-to-back Test matches.On the first three days of play, Australia lost both Test matches in Nagpur and New Delhi after failing to handle the spin test. Australia faces the possibility of being eliminated from the World Test Championship final if India sweeps them in the series. Australia was expected to face either India, Sri Lanka, or South Africa in the final during the four-match tour.Nevertheless, as things stand, Sri Lanka and India are battling for a place in the championship game, while Australia could be eliminated entirely. Australia did not do well in Delhi, as their batters once more gave up in just over one session of play. Australia's second innings was bowled out for just 113 runs in the early session of Day 3, despite a strong start and a 61/1 score at the end of Day 2.
Cummins had stated in a post-game interview that his batters needed to improve their effort and find a way to score runs in India.
